Getting started¶
How to install MineDnD, add its content, play it with friends and keep it up to date.
Minecraft 26.3 · Fabric Loader 0.19.5 · Fabric API 0.162.0+26.3
Install with the modpack (easiest)¶
Every release has a Modrinth modpack, MineDnD-<version>.mrpack, on the repository's Releases page. It
contains Minecraft 26.3, Fabric Loader, Fabric API and MineDnD, plus optional extras: Sodium, Iris with the
Complementary Reimagined shaders, Villager Trading Plus and 4 resource packs (Faithful 64x, …; installed but off: turn
them on in Options → Resource Packs). The full list is in modpack/.
- Install the Modrinth App (modrinth.com/app).
- New instance → Import from file, and pick the
.mrpack(or drag the file onto the app). - Play.
Install by hand¶
Install Fabric Loader 0.19.5 for Minecraft 26.3 (https://fabricmc.net/use/installer/) and put
MineDnD-<version>.jar and Fabric API 0.162.0+26.3 in .minecraft/mods.
Add the content¶
The mod brings the mechanics (ability scores, levels, the character sheet, item abilities, commands) but no content.
The magic items, enchantments, requirement rules, achievements and titles are the MineDnD Default Content
datapack, MineDnD-Default-Content-<version>.zip on the Releases page. Add it to each world that should have them:
- A new world: Create New World → More → Data Packs → drag the zip in → move it to Selected.
- An existing world: put the zip in the world's
datapacksfolder and open the world again. - A server: put the zip in
<world>/datapacks/on the server and restart it. Players don't need it.
Its looks (optional): MineDnD-Default-Content-Resources-<version>.zip, next to it, is a resource pack that gives
the weapons, staffs, bows, tomes, armor, jewelry and food their own icons, and the armor its own look when worn. Put it in the game's resourcepacks folder and turn it on in
Options → Resource Packs (the modpack already has it there: just turn it on). Without it, items keep their base item's
look. See its looks.
Everything about it (where the folders are, updating it, using only part of it, changing it): The Default Content datapack.
Update only MineDnD¶
In an instance you've already set up (other mods, settings and worlds stay as they are), don't import the new
.mrpack: that makes a new instance. Instead, with the game closed:
- Download
MineDnD-<version>.jarfrom the Releases page. - In the Modrinth App, open the instance's folder (
%APPDATA%\ModrinthApp\profiles\<folder>\modson Windows). - Delete the old
MineDnD-*.jarand put the new one there.
<folder> is the instance's folder name. It keeps the name the instance had when it was created, even if you rename the
instance in the app (e.g. an instance imported from MineDnD-0.2.1.mrpack lives in profiles/MineDnD-0.2.1).
Play together¶
- The server and every player need the same MineDnD version. A player with another version, or without MineDnD, can't join and is told which version to install. Update the server and everyone's game together.
- Open to LAN works like any other world. On a dedicated server, put the same jar and Fabric API in its
modsfolder. - Character data is saved with each player on the server and follows them across sessions and deaths.
First steps in game¶
- Create a world with the MineDnD example world button (Create World screen, Game tab), after adding the Default Content datapack under Data Packs. It's Survival on Hard with commands allowed, and chests in front of you hold every MineDnD item and enchanted book.
- Press K for the character sheet. Your six ability scores start at 10.
- As the operator, try
/dnd stats set @s str 16or/dnd level add @s 2, then spend the points in the sheet. - Magic items wake up when you meet their requirements: with STR 12, right-click a Flame Sword to throw it (it comes back); with INT 13, a Wizard's Staff shoots fire bolts.
What all of this does: How MineDnD works. Every command: Commands.
Change the rules or add content¶
The items, rules and numbers come from datapacks, so a world can change them without code:
- Start from the Default Content datapack: change parts of it with a small pack of your own.
- Or write your own: Datapacks starts with a complete pack, step by step, then documents every file.
